Earthdawn Fate Roller

Need more steps?

You might need some more steps, random-possibilities and so on. Ever had a Circle 10 Warrior as SC? If you have, then you might enjoy Fate Roller. Fate Roller is an Earthdawn based random tool for every task you need quick decisions and quick dice rolls.

How to use Fate Roller

In the top of the programm you have three text windows. One to present you the dices rolled, one to show you the results and one to give you continous information about what the program does for you.

In addtition you see a statistics button at the top. This button opens a window showing you mean, ranges and some other stuff around steps and rolls. The number of samples to be taken during the calculation can be altered by the entry on the right side of the button. Your computer might take a while to calculate these stats. So just try to start with a moderate number of samples.

The next block contains the random text entries. When you start the program the first time, all the buttons will be called "unused". Just click on a button an then press F7. You can now enter a new title for the button and in the list (text window) you may enter up to 400 lines. Each line represents one possebility from which the program randomly chooses when you hit the specific button. This opens a variety of storytelling possibilities to any GM. For example: Name a button "Forest". Then entering "Characters have to face a wood elemental", "Characters find some Gold"... and so on. Of course you'll spoil the game if you relate your whole storytelling on such random things but in some cases it might enforce tension, because not even the GM does exactly know what happens next. Use this tool in specific regions, kaers, dungeons, social situations...

The final block is just a rather classic dice roller with extended step tables related... Have you ever played a Circle 12 Warrior with several Magical Items, Blood Charms, Armor to the max? Or did your story ever face a dragon with loads of ritual magic loaded? If not you might find this extended tables unuseful, but if you did, you'll going to love this extension. Of course you can add Karma (and so on) by simply using the "add" block.

Interested in the distribution of step results? Just click on a step and press F7. Here you get a complete distribution table with a number of samples according to the entry in the first block (default is 1,000). With this tool you can easily have an eye on what players have to come along with, when you're assigning steps to any action.

At least I decided to add a Decision Roller. This is only random (no steps and means...) and can be used in every decision where you do not need any second rolls. If you have to make a random decision between two or more directions of gameplay (or scatter for example) click on the "Number of directions" (6, when you use scatter by standard rules).

There is a button called "Step Table". Just try it. It will do nothing else but output the whole Step Table up to Step 100 - so you can use it in other programs (CRTL-C it to the clipboard and CRTL-V it into whatever...).
